East Asian LGBTQ+ Community

LGBTQ+COMMUNITY WHAT IS IT?

We are students from Bayview Secondary School that want to bring awareness about the East Asian LGBTQ+ Community.

LGBTQ is an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning. These terms are used to describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

  • Lesbian/Gay- Individuals who are romantically, emotionally, and/or sexually attracted to the same sex/gender.

  • Transgender-An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.

  • Bisexual- A person who has the capacity to form enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attractions to those of the same gender or to those of another gender.

  • Queer- An adjective used by some people whose sexual orientation is not exclusively heterosexual. Typically, for those who identify as queer, the terms lesbian, gay, and bisexual are perceived to be too limiting and/or fraught with cultural connotations they feel don’t apply to them.

  • QUESTIONING- Sometimes, when the Q is seen at the end of LGBT, it can also mean questioning. This term describes someone who is questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Same-Sex Marriage Legalization by Country

The rights and freedom of LGBTQ communities are limited in most east Asian countries, same-sex marriage is illegal and unacceptable in 8 east Asian countries. Same-sex marriage is not allowed in China, Hong Kong, Japan: NO,  Macau: yes, Mongolia: NO, North Korea: Yes, South Korea: No, Taiwan. In 2019 Taiwan became the first and only country in East Asia that legalized gay marriage.

What should same-sex couple do if they want to get marry in East Asian countries that does not accept same-sex marriage?

The most ideal way to get married and have marriage protected under law is to immigrate to countries that accept same-sex marriage.

If the couple wants to remain the citizens in an East Asian country that does not accept same-sex, they can get married in Canada because Canada is the only country that allows both parties to have no national citizenship, but still, get married. In other countries, at least one party needs to be a citizen of that country to get married. However, the marriage law in Canada only applies when you are in Canada, which means if you married in Canada and go back to an East Asian country with a law that does not protect same-sex marriage, the marriage licence you get in Canada is invalid.
